National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns consumers that all smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years. Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms need to be replaced every 5-7 years.
It is law that every home in British Columbia must have a working smoke alarm.
In 2007 5 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning related to the use of gas powered appliances.
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas. You may not smell it, but could be exposed unknowingly to CO. High levels of carbon monoxide poisoning can cause death in as little as 1 to 3 minutes.
Cooking is a major cause of house fires British Columbia.
In 2006 there were 3125 fires in British Columbia which required smoke alarms. Of those only 13% activated and assisted the occupants in evacuating. There were 23 deaths and 201 injuries that year.
